??????

This post will remain untitled until I can think of a title that does it justice. If you would like to add your suggestions in your comments, please feel free.

You all remember Shadow. He's the stray cat that adopted us last October, was run over (by me), and returned again. That alone should demonstrate his loyalty to our family, right? Well, a few weeks ago, he wasn't in his bed at bed time, so I left the garage door open a crack so he could return. That night at 4am, I heard meowing outside so I went to see if he was hurt. I saw Shadow with a little cat friend in our front yard. When they saw me, they both darted away. In the morning, Shadow was back. The next week, (last week) he disappeared for three days. I wondered if maybe he had been using us for our warm garage in the cold months and now he was moving on. We also thought that he was probably out "cattin' around" (as Darin puts it), and thought that if he did come back we should do the responsible thing and get him neutered to help control the pet population. He did return and that very day I called the Vet to make an appointment for him to be neutered. Yesterday was the day of the appointment. Darin dropped him off, and they said they would leave a message on my cell phone when he could be picked up. I subbed in the morning, and checked my messages when I got home. This is what the message said:

"Hi, this is the Animal Clinic. We have Shadow here, and it looks like he has already been neutered....really recently....probably in the last week or so. You can come get him anytime."

HUH???
So apparently when we thought he was out living out his rebellious teenage years, he was really recovering from SURGERY! I asked the vet if he was sure it happened recently, and he assured me that it happened within the last week to week and a half.

My mind was trying to comprehend how in the world that happened. Here were my theories.

1) A stray van came around to neuter all the strays in the area.
**this theory was shot when the vet told me that if that happens, they clip the ear of the cat. Shadow's ear remains un-clipped.

2) Some person saw him with their female cat and didn't want him to get her pregnant.
**this theory was quickly thrown out the window when common sense dictated that it would be MUCH more cost effective for the owner of the female cat to get their cat spayed rather than neuter every male cat that came around.

3) Random act of kindness
**if this is the case, it is THE most RANDOM random act of kindness ever!

4) He is a cheater.
Either he belonged to someone else when he came to our house, and he's cheating on them or he has since been out looking for another family to spend his time with and is cheating on us. This can be the only plausible explanation, because someone obviously felt that they owned him enough to pay to have him neutered. The thing that baffles me, though, is that he is ALWAYS here. (I'm sure that's what all victims of infidelity say.) The detective in me really wants to know what's going on. When I ran him over in January, his collar came off and was broken, so when he returned we got him a new collar. He only wore it for a couple of days, then it was gone. I thought that maybe someone else had taken it off of him, but I found the collar yesterday afternoon under his bed. I put the collar on him yesterday, and he had it on last night when I went to bed. He wasn't back home last night, but he is here this morning...with no collar. It is possible that he managed to wiggle out of it again, but we can't be so sure. The next step is to get another collar and attach a message to it. Although it might be pointless. What are we going to do? Create a custody agreement with the other owners? The thing that makes me laugh is that there is probably another blog post somewhere out there stating someone else's shock that someone would put a collar on their cat. In any event, Shadow (or whatever his name is) is here and neutered--with no cost to me. So, other family, if you're out there somewhere: Thank you.

Christmas 2007

I realize Christmas is already three months behind us, but I just realized that I hadn't finished writing about our Christmas festivities (or several things since then). And since there is currently snow on the ground, I thought it would be the perfect day to finish up before next Christmas comes and I forget about this one!

We spent Christmas Eve with my Aunt Bernice (Bonnie to us) and her family. When I walked in her house, memories from my childhood flooded back in, and I felt right at home. She has a way of making people feel at home. I cried (happy tears) seeing her pull the rolls out of the oven. (I guess this was the night before.) It reminded me so much of my grandma. Grandma's hostess abilities definitely passed down to her daughters. I hope at least a smidgen of those abilities will one day be mine.
Her family's Christmas Eve dinner tradition is sloppy joes and root beer floats. Love it! After dinner Gail and her family came and we dressed up for the Nativity. (Amazing costumes made by Gail.)

After the Nativity it was time for the chimes. This was so fun!

Play that funky music, White Boy!
Next was the opening of PJs!

And here's (blurry) proof that we spent real life, non-blogging time with these fine folk. I felt like I had stepped out of my computer and into their lives. They are just as fun as you would imagine, and it left me wanting to live closer to them.

We left Aunt Bonnie's and headed back to Grandpa's house to leave cookies for Santa. We had to be creative about where to leave the stockings. Grandpa's furntiture was a little displaced because of the new flooring that was being put in. We laid them in a circular pattern on the floor.
The next morning brought:
Breakfast (prepared by Darin)

Presents: this year was a pretty "skinny" Christmas (as my dad calls it) as far as gifts go, but we decided that memories at Disneyland and with family would be the way to spend this Christmas. They were still pretty happy!

After we cleaned up, we headed for the BEACH!!! It was so great to smell the beach, walk on the sand, and soak up a few rays. I've never experienced this on Christmas day, and it was wonderful! The kids started out by getting their feet wet, then they pulled up their pant legs, and before long the oldest three were drenched!

David was not a fan of the sand. Every time we tried to get him to walk on the beach he did this:
GRANDPA
SET, HIKE!

This last picture is of our little family on the day we left California. It was such a great trip! I still can't believe that I'm the mom. I still feel like a kid. The ride home was less than ideal. We hit the worst traffic EVER and went 30 miles an hour or less for the first three hours. I was about to go crazy. My kids, on the other hand, were champs. We made it to a hotel in St. George a little after midnight and took our time the next morning swimming and eating breakfast before we finished our journey. Even after a wonderful trip, there's no place like home! I felt myself getting giddy as we neared our exit. When we pulled into our garage there was a Welcome Home sign on our door from Lily and Julie. We felt so loved and grateful to be back home.

Hungry?

I have been trying to organize my pictures on the computer, and have had a great time reminiscing. I laughed out loud (and gagged at the same time) when I came across these of Warren. Our little independent child decided to cook himself a hot dog. The smell alerted us to the fact that something was wrong. These are not for the faint of heart, or for those who love hot dogs.

For Ker

Ker challenged her readers to write about a funny experience. And though the experience I'm about to share is laughter at my own expense, it's still pretty funny! Hope you enjoy!

When Olivia was almost three she was in my bedroom as I was getting out of the shower. She sat on my bed and watched me get dressed. She turned to me and said, "Mom, why is your bum all...(she paused and her eyebrows furrowed as her brain was searching for the perfect word)...scrambled?" I was laughing too hard to be offended.

This reminded me of another Olivia story from about the same era. Sean was a newborn, and I was cleaning his newborn belly button. She was most concerned about the growth that was where his belly button should be and asked, "What is that?" I told her that it was his belly button, and pretty soon part of it would fall off and it would look just like hers. That seemed to satisfy her until I opened his diaper to change it. The same look of concern came and she asked, "When will that fall off?" I replied, "Hopefully never", and we had a chat about what makes a boy a boy and a girl a girl.
